Donna Forma uses sticks and mica to create her wall mounted sculpture, "Gold Mica." ⁠
⁠
The spherical woody web seems almost light from within by the fragile sheets of mica that line the twiggy network. The precise globe at the center of the composition seems to fray at either end, as though the fine branches are reaching, searching for something like roots in search of water. ⁠

Painter Michael Manning virtually sat down with us to discuss his background, what motivates him as an artist, and the ins and outs of his painting practice. The dual and ambivalent nature of human beings has long been a dominant theme in Michael Manning's work. His paintings often situate human and animal figures in otherwise abstract environments. Although recognizable forms are asserted with dynamic lines and bold silhouettes, overlapping transparencies can lend them a subtle, shadowy presence. ⁠
⁠
�Manning's process is typically revealed in visible layers of drawing and painting that introduce, deconstruct, and nearly wash away his protagonists. This layering functions as a record of creative time and change, but can also insinuate multiple sides of a person or situation. While Manning's work is process oriented and driven visually by formalists decisions, the motivation for the subject matter often uses larger, universal moral messages found in mythology and religion as thematic inspiration.⁠

David Leventi, "Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg, Russia, 2009," digital chromogenic print⁠

Though David Leventi photographs empty architectural interiors and exteriors, his eye for both meticulous detail and sweeping composition transforms his works into deeply moving portraits of spatial experiences. ⁠
⁠
He pursues vertical and lateral symmetry, which paradoxically creates a flattening of the image and yet gives the viewer the sensation of being enveloped by his photographs’ subjects. Leventi works in series. ⁠
⁠
For “Bjoerling’s Larynx: World Famous Opera Houses” (2007-10), he extensively documented the interiors of world famous opera houses; he took each photograph at center stage exactly where a performer would stand, attempting to allow light to move through his photographs the way a performer’s voice moves through the space, as in Royal Swedish Opera, Stockholm, Sweden (2008).⁠

We are proud to present new CBCA artist, Younghee Choi Martin⁠

Since the late 1970’s, Younghee Choi Martin has lived and worked in Chelsea, NYC, where she was one of the earliest artists to establish a painting studio. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Younghee has been awarded painting fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the NY CAPS program. ⁠
⁠
Through a massive play of shape and color, Younghee's highly worked surfaces address both the density and the fresh, lyric expressiveness of the ancient dramas to reveal a contemporary vision. There is a reductive, modernist integration of the figurative and landscape elements in these works. Through the continual development of the paint, the surface, the composition, and the texture, the narrative is never lost. It breathes through the layers to slowly release a pictorial structure and a lyric dimension.⁠
⁠
Younghee's works have been exhibited in New York and throughout the United States, Korea, Japan, France, and Italy. Over 80 of her paintings and drawings are in collections and museums in the United States, Korea, Japan, and India.⁠

While that eternal search for perfection seems laudable to me, I find it utopic, and impractical in the face of contemporary society and values. Painter and sculptor, Santiago Lozano, virtually sat down with us to discuss his long evolving sculptral practice. Lozano centers his work around the themes of imperfection and collapse. Lozano searches for flaws, quirks, and foibles by exploring such topics as damage in otherwise perfect geometries, capturing the ephemeral moment of collapse in rigid materials and structures, or highlighting and creating compositions around the “error” in an artwork.⁠
⁠
Working predominantly in steel and aluminum, Lozano’s sculptures often depict simple geometric shapes, such as rectangular prisms, which have been dented or collapsed in some way. Such imperfects frustrate the expected geometric perfection of the structures in favor the artist’s hand and all those things that make us truly human.⁠
