Banksy is an anonymous English graffiti artist whose satirical street art and subversive epigrams grew out of the Bristol underground scene. Banksy's first film, "Exit Through the Gift Shop", was nominated for a 2010 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Banksy released a statement, "This is a big surprise... I don't agree with the concept of award ceremonies, but I'm prepared to make an exception for the ones I'm nominated for. The last time there was a naked man covered in gold paint in my house, it was me." Exit Through the Gift Shop did not win the award, but my daughter, Leslye Headland, had loved the film and was living in Los Angeles at the time. Leslye was absolutely miserable that "Exit Through the Gift Shop" had not won the coveted award. The day after the Oscar ceremony she called to tell me that she had just been out to lunch with a friend who consoled her with the words: “Don’t worry Leslye, Banksy always wins”. This piece depicts two-year-old Leslye, holding an Oscar, standing before the quote.
