"The artist of the future will merely point his finger and say it is art, and it will be art." -Marcel Duchamp The title of the piece references Matisse’s many paintings of his own studio. It was unusual in his time to paint the artist’s own works within a painting. The blue rug is appropriated from one of these paintings. Cynthia Byrnes is pointing to a self-portrait of Julie Headland titled, "The Artist is Present." The work within the work is a tribute to artist Marina Abramovic the preeminent performance artist of our time.
