"Art is to console those who are broken by life..." Vincent van Gogh's "Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear" is a painting where the artist depicts himself with a bandaged right ear, which in reality was his left ear. This bandage was a result of a self-inflicted injury following a heated argument with Paul Gauguin. The painting was created in January 1889, a week after Van Gogh left the hospital where he had been treated for the injury.
