Ruben Marroquin

b. 1979 , Chicago , IL

Artist and textile/surface designer, Ruben Marroquin, works primarily with fiber arts, enhancing the graphic elements of linear pliable materials such as cotton, bamboo, linen, and metallic yarns through a uniquely sculptural approach to weaving and embroidery. While rooted in traditional techniques the decidedly mix media nature of Marroquin’s work brings his practice beyond fiber arts to what he describes as ‘fiber sculpture.’ His process has evolved over 2 decades from traditional hand embroidery to large scale installations. Having fallen in love with weaving on encountered on the streets of Venezuela, Marroquin is profoundly influenced by his Guatemalan and Venezuelan ancestry and his motivation to reconnect with his heritage through textiles.
